ZOO Ústí nad Labem

ZOO Ústí nad Labem - Elephants Not far from the centre of Usti nad Labem in quiet surrounding is located the Zoo Usti nad Labem. Its history dates back to the early 20th century when a wealthy local metal merchant, Heinrich Lumpe purchased a six hectare former brickworks on the slopes of the Marian Rock to establish his own private bird reservation. After the World War I, it wa's the local people who were vocal in their defence of this reserve and its surroundings with the rush to develop all available land for industrial purposes. Mr Lumpe continued to improve the park in the style of the period. He brought 20 wagons of tuff, a form of concrete, from Durynsko and from this built a dwarf castle and fairy caves. You can still see this dwarf castle today proving that this concrete was certainly tuff! After the second world war, the bird reservation became a zoo garden which was an ideal spot for Usti people to relax during their leisure time . A major developement took place in the nineteen seventies when the park was increased to almost 30 hectares. Modem building for the animals without bars, glass being used instead, here you can see also large enclosures for rhinos, giraffes, elephants, zebras and antilopes. Today the zoo is housing over 2000 animals from 180 species from all over the world. In the new thinking, Usti nad Labem zoo. like many other proudly focuses on breeding endangered species with a view to reintroduce them to their natural habitat wherepossible, thus saving them for future generations.

We mention some of the animals listed in the International Book of endagered species which can be seen in Usti zoo, lemur kata, black gibbon, bomeo orangutan, malaisic bear, ocelot, Sumatra tiger, Somali ass, Liberian hippopotamus, kakadu, ara, cortical and crajta. In the summer season are regular themed animal show days which are very popular including the elephant school, birds or prey feeding demonstrations, feeding of piran, ,,honey tree" to the malai bears, and do not be surprised if you meet two elephants out for a walk with their keeper around Usti in the summer. In the winter season there is only the elephant show and on Mondays is Animal Free Day. The Childrens World exposition features replica wooden sculptures of animals including elephant, rhino, and an instructve route in the steps of the prehistoric animals such as dinosaurus.

ZOO Děčín

ZOO Děčín - bears ZOO was opened by Mr. Grác in 1949, and established even one year before.

At the beginning there were just a few animals on an area of about 1 hectare. From the very beginning the director’s office was in the office block that had survived from pre-war times. Mr. Grác became the director, and was in this position to 1965. In the 1950´s - 1970´s the ZOO hosted a lot of rare species, e.g.:

Malayan sun bear (the first and only one in the Czech Republic in the 50´s), chamois (the first captive breeding in the 70´s, with totally 10 young ones of this species which is difficult to breed in captivity were born and reared in the ZOO).

Around 1970 under the directorship of Mr. Kočí, this ZOO became famous particularly for its breeding of chamois. The first chamois ever born in Bohemia in captivity came into world right here in our ZOO. There was also a lot of bears - European or Asian ones. It was also this ZOO where the first capybara, babirusa or gemsbock born in captivity in Bohemia and Slovakia saw the light of day. Briefly speaking the ZOO was quite successful. Nevertheless it might have been even better when our ZOO directors had more money, and could built enclosures, pens and runs for all their animals in which they could feel happy as we do, i.e. me and Helga in our enclosure.

Today the ZOO keeps about 110 species on an area of more than 6 hectares. Except for us there livemore than 330 hairy, feathered and scaly friends Every year 50 000 - 60 000 visitors come to see us. Of course, I do not count them, it is the job of our ticket clerk. But I think that the visitors like the ZOO because they really can see a lot of things there. I am sure that they meet lots of animals for the first time right here in our ZOO. Helga and me, we are sometimes also surprised what our director and zoologist are able to acquire. Once it can be an absolutely hairless pig, then a porcupine living on trees or a dwarf cattle unable to provide meat for a single dinner. It may be their intention - to introduce animals that can be otherwise hardly seen.
