Úštěk in the present

The town of Úštěk has a population of 1 600 persons, or 2 700 if all 22 administrative districts are included. The municipality administers an area of 7 000 ha.

Vief of City hall before sunset Part of the population is traditionally occupied with agriculture, and a number of people are employed in the metal processing industry and in furniture production. The textile industry has declined a little whereas the sector of services has experienced rapid growth. However, the unemployment rate in the region is relatively high.

The municipality is the founder of the kindergarten and the elementary school as well as of the free time facility for children and youth. Children may also attend the Litoměřice school of arts which has a branch in Úštěk. The youth orchestra Flautoband participates in festivals in the town and its neighborhood as well as abroad, for instance in the Dresden Musical Festival. The amateur theater ensemble Pikart has its home stage in the local cinema and performs for the local people and tourists. The cinema is a cultural center for the community where concerts and school academies, film and theater performances take place. The community cultural house is more suitable for balls and dancing events.

Creative Arts can be seen in two places of the town: during the season artists exhibit their works in the unique premises of the Pikart Tower, the private gallery U brány on the 1-May Street is open throughout the year.

St. Peter and Paul church The sports club Slavoj Úštěk has an active membership. Traditionally, football is played in Úštěk by all age groups. A women's football group was created recently. Football is also played in the sports club FC Ajax Robeč. A more intensive growth of sports activities is prevented by the lack of suitable facilities, especially gymnasiums. A certain solution may be the expected transformation of the unused shopping center in the Polské Armády Street into a sports center with bowling tracks, body building room, sauna and other. The environs of the town are very suitable for biking.

The outpatient clinic on Mírové Square provides the care of practitioners, pediatricians and dentists. Gynecologist's and physiotherapist's offices are located in the Pionýrů residential area. The nearest hospital is in Litoměřice.

Shops and restaurants can be found mainly along the 1. Máje Street, on Mírové Square and in Polské Armády Street, in the Pionýrů residential area, and also by Barvíř pond and on the banks of Chmelař pond. Favorite and esteemed restaurants can also be found in the neighboring villages, e. g. in Habřina. Accommodation is offered especially in private boarding houses.
